Clear Computer Case
What is a clear computer case and what could it do for you? Well, before we start talking about the clear
computer case, let me ask you something: what does your desktop or tower computer case mean to you? I could even
ask: what does your computer mean to you? I ask this because your answer will determine what you want for your
computer and its housing or case.
Most people have always been happy enough with the plain, standard, light-grey, full tower case that comes as
bog-standard with the majority of computers. Some have never even thought about it. But then there are others who
have thought about their desktop computer case a lot and who want something special for their computer.
Some of these people were good at metalwork, others at woodwork and a few at glassware and there are some truly
fantastic, futuristic, homemade custom PC cases out there. Especially among the gaming community. However, we are
not all so gifted with our hands, but that does not mean that we have to be stuck with a standard, grey, desktop or
tower computer case.
The easiest alternative, if you want a custom PC case is to make one out of acrylic – the type of material used
to make most fish tanks. You can buy and easily cut sheets of acrylic for the sides and bond them all together with
acrylic resin. That may sound difficult, but it really is not. First you would have to study the architecture of a
standard computer case and then just copy it in acrylic. You could make a clear computer case in a weekend.
Or you could buy a clear computer case kit. These clear acrylic computer cases come in flat-packs just like most
kitchen furniture and can be easily assembled according to the instructions with a screwdriver. No cutting, no
measuring, just a little gentle screwing.
And I mean gentle, because the screws that come with the clear computer case packs are usually made of acrylic
too and will break easily. It is the only part of the assembly process that requires a cautionary note, because you
don’t want to have to drill out a broken screw, do you? That would only put a dampener on your fun.
So why would anyone want a clear computer case? I imagine that there are many reasons. Some people may just want
to be different and others may want to show that they can assemble or even create such a case. However, the clear
computer case also has aesthetic and practical advantages. At least the good ones do.
On the Aesthetic Front: enthusiasts add neon lights and small LEDs that flash on and off or just
glow eerily, perhaps triggered by some event, like a hard drive coming to life. These displays are called ‘themes’
and are typically coloured red or blue, but can be almost any conceivable colour. Then you can add coloured fans
(or paint your existing ones). You already have at least one computer case fan in your case and probably two or
three.
On the Practical Front: lots of people like to see what is happening inside their computer case
and it is neither practical nor safe to remove the case's panels all together. Furthermore, assembling your own
clear computer case allows you to add more fans for super cooling as over-heating is the main cause of hardware
failure. The more fans the better for the CPU, the power supply, drive bay and other accessories.
A clear computer case would also allow you to see if a fan has failed, which would result in over heating in a
normal case and certain hardware failure, whereas you would see it happening through your acrylic clear computer
case and replace the fan before serious damage and loss of data could occur.
